A shirt shrinks in the wash mainly because its fibres, pure cotton especially, contract with hot water, high-heat drying or hard wringing. Prevention is straightforward: choose a blend with synthetic fibre, ask whether the fabric has been treated for shrinkage, test-wash a sample before a large order, and wash by the care label. For companies, test-washing at the sample stage avoids a whole batch of uniforms going out of shape.
Why shirts shrink
During weaving and dyeing, fibres are pulled taut. Water and heat let them relax and return to their original state, and the shirt becomes shorter or narrower. The table gathers the usual causes.
| Cause | Sign | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Pure cotton not treated for shrinkage | Shorter body and sleeves after the first wash | Choose a polyester blend or ask about shrinkage treatment before making |
| Hot water | Uneven shrinking at collar and body | Wash cold or lightly warm, per the label |
| High-heat drying | Shorter, thicker, creased | Air-dry; if tumbling, use low heat |
| Hard wringing, long soaking | Distorted cuffs and collar band | Wring gently, avoid long soaks |
| Hot ironing on damp cloth | Local shrinking and shine | Iron on a heat suited to the fabric |

Choose fabric to limit shrinkage from the start
Much of the outcome is decided at fabric selection, before any wash:
- Cotton-polyester blend: usually shrinks less than pure cotton and holds shape better, though it is slightly less soft.
- Ask about shrinkage treatment: at the design and fabric stage, ask for the shrinkage behaviour of each fabric you are weighing.
- Weave: a firm weave keeps shape better than a very thin one that distorts after many washes.
- Fit: a very close fit feels tight after only slight shrinking. Individual measuring and fitting on site help set sensible ease.
Collar and sleeve styles can be previewed in our design library.
Washing correctly
- Read the care label and follow its heat level.
- Wash cold or lightly warm on a gentle cycle, shirt turned inside out.
- Do not soak for long, especially coloured shirts.
- Wring gently, never twisting the collar and sleeves hard.
- Dry in the shade on a hanger so the shirt settles flat; avoid high-heat tumbling.
- Iron while slightly damp at a heat that suits the fabric.
How far can a shrunken shirt be rescued
You can improve it a little, but it seldom returns to its original state. The common method is to soak the shirt in cool water with a little mild conditioner, stretch it gently while wet, dry it flat and finish with steam. If shrinkage is heavy or the collar or shoulders are distorted, take it to a tailor instead of stretching further.
For companies: test-wash at sample approval
Uniforms are laundered very often, so check shrinkage early:
- Test-wash the sample a few times by the care label before signing, and re-measure collar, shoulder and sleeve length before and after.
- Sign off only when satisfied. Mon Amie produces only after your company signs the sample.
- Measure and fit on site: our on-site tailoring team measures each employee at the office, stored under employee IDs; at delivery, staff try on and we adjust on the spot.
- Ask about care: raise it in consultation so Mon Amie can advise on laundering for your chosen fabric.
Hoàng Vy – Mon Amie was founded in 1991, with a 1,000 m² workshop on 3/2 Street, more than 80 skilled tailors and quality checks at three stages (cutting, assembly, finishing). Men's shirts start from 600,000 VND and women's from 480,000 VND (minimum 20 pieces); real prices depend on fabric, style and quantity. Allow 4–6 weeks after sample approval; alterations are covered by free warranty for 3 years at every showroom.
To request a quotation, submit your details on our quote page or call 0888.111.118 (the same number on Zalo); Mon Amie will schedule a survey at your premises and show real swatches that you can examine and test-wash before signing off.
Frequently asked questions
Can a shrunken cotton shirt be stretched back?
Usually only partly. Soaking in cool water with a little mild conditioner, stretching gently while wet and drying flat is the common approach. Heavy shrinkage rarely reverses fully.
Do polyester blend shirts shrink?
They usually shrink less than pure cotton because the synthetic fibre helps hold shape. Even so, follow the care label and avoid high-heat drying, which can distort the cloth.
What if our company shirts shrink?
Bring a shirt to a showroom so Mon Amie can assess it. Mon Amie uniforms carry a free 3-year alteration warranty at every showroom; coverage for each case is confirmed by Mon Amie when it is received.
How should we test-wash a shirt sample before approving it?
Wash the sample a few times by the care label, re-measure collar, shoulder and sleeve length before and after, and compare. Sign off only when the change is acceptable; Mon Amie produces only after your company signs the sample.
